Foods for Dental Health: Sesame Oil

Foods for Dental Health: Sesame Oil

As we near the end of our Artistic Touch Dentistry series on foods that boost dental health, we bring you the most surprising addition: sesame oil! Along with vegetables, Xylitol, fluoridated water, cheese, and fruit, sesame oil is an excellent tool to neutralize acid and boost dental health.

Sesame seeds are thought to reduce plaque and help remineralize tooth enamel. A method of gargling with sesame oil, known as “oil pulling,” is popular in Ayurvedic medicine. And in one controlled, triple-blind study, washing with sesame oil was just as effective as using chlorhexidine mouthwash in reducing plaque, gingival scores, and the total bacterial count among a group of teenage boys who already had a diagnosis of plaque-induced gingivitis.

So add a little sesame oil to your diet and perhaps even try a sesame oil gargle to fight gingivitis-causing plaque and improve your dental health today. Sesame oil and other foods for dental health are an excellent way to bolster the work of your biannual cleanings with Dr. Maryam Brazdo and daily flossing in order to make the most of your beautiful smile!
