Only Floss The Teeth You Want To Keep!

When you visit your dentist I’m sure they ask you about your flossing habits. Sometimes this advice can go in one ear and out the other because flossing provides no instant gratification. However flossing provides long-term benefits that will keep your teeth healthy over time. WebMD reported that,  “flossing does about 40% of the work required to remove sticky bacteria, or plaque, from your teeth. Plaque generates acid, which can cause cavities, irritate the gums, and lead to gum disease. Each tooth has five surfaces. If you don’t floss, you are leaving at least two of the surfaces unclean. Floss is the only thing that can really get into that space between the teeth and remove bacteria.”

WebMD recommends that, “people who have larger spaces between their teeth or with gum recession should choose a flat, wide dental floss to get the best results. If your teeth are close together, you should try thinner floss.” However, the type of floss you use isn’t as important as long as you’re flossing!

Make sure to use a piece of floss 15 to 18 inches long, slide it between the teeth, wrap it around each tooth in the shape of a “C,” and polish with an up and down motion, WebMD instructs. If you bleed when you floss, don’t worry. A little bleeding means that plaque has built up and needs to be cleaned away so don’t let it deter you from flossing.
