Who Reviews Products for the ADA Seal of Approval?

At Artistic Touch Dentistry, we’ve been reviewing the importance of the American Dental Association’s Seal of Approval and what precisely that Seal represents for consumers. It connotes safety, consistency, and reliability as well as laboratory tested health impacts.

But who determines which products receive the ADA Seal of Approval? There are around 100 consultants who review and declare oral care products safe, effective and worthy of the ADA Seal. The consultants represent all fields relevant to evaluating dental products, including dental materials, microbiology, pharmacology, toxicology and chemistry.

After this rigorous process conducted by ADA consultants, ADA Council on Scientific Affairs can require further testing or award the Seal to that product.  And each product is tested individually, so no manufacturer has carte blanche approval.
